Izzy makes 1000!
CHCC Women’s 1st XI - Round 5 T20 vs Parkfield
Match Report by Rex
After some welcome relief from the wet weather of recent weeks, and with provisions made to play on Parkfield’s back up synthetic pitch, the 1st XI made their way to Keysborough to meet a new opponent, Parkfield CC.
Captain Rachael ‘Razzle’ Jones lost the toss and we were sent in to bat in windy and overcast conditions. In a change from last week, Hannah ‘HG’ Gray was joined by Razzle to open the batting. The two were tested early, challenged to face variable length and bounce in the opening couple of overs. Runs were hard to come by, with a tight field and difficult bowling, and after a couple of overs HG misjudged a good delivery that took her stumps.
Ready to pick up where she left off last game, Izzy Fenner came in at three, batting out of her crease to meet her first delivery on the full and pull it away for four behind square. Over the next few overs our run rate slowly increased as Izzy and Razzle worked to settle in. With Izzy dealing mostly in boundaries, we also kept count on the sidelines as she inched closer to making the 28 runs needed to become the first woman at CHCC to make 1000 runs. The milestone came in the eighth over with a lofted shot over mid-wicket for an easy two thanks to a misfield, before the pair continued the task ahead. After a 42-run partnership, however, Izzy found the fielder at mid-off in the 10th over, leaving CHCC 2/44.
Next to join Razzle at the crease was Laila ‘Electric Train’ Rae, keen to continue her form from Round 1, but again Parkfield’s bowling was tough to put away. Unfortunately, it was not long until Razzle was caught for her nine runs and we found ourselves 3/46. This brought Rachel ‘Greyhound’ Gray to the crease, who was ready to run and gave a welcome boost to our total. After putting on 10 runs together, however, we lost Electric Train who was bowled by Parkfield’s captain, leaving us 4/56.
With five overs left in the innings, Ash ‘Steam Train’ Murdoch joined Greyhound at the crease. Despite some good running, and a crisp boundary forward of square from Greyhound, we found ourselves struggling to crack 80 for the day. On the second last ball of the innings, Rach found herself lbw (again, by Parkfield’s captain). For the final ball of our innings, our latest junior to debut with the seniors, Annika Fillips, walked out looking confident beyond her years to see off the last ball and we finished 5/78.
We started our fielding innings with line, length and swing from the southern end courtesy of Hannah ‘Handsy’ Watson and Steam Train. In the third over, the faintest of edges was given caught behind in a wicket maiden from Handsy. With Parkfield 1/10 after 4 overs, CHCC were off to a good start. Cue Emily ‘Dominos’ Costigan for the fifth over, who struck mid-over when Parkfield’s opening bat miscued and skied a catch to Electric Train at square leg.
With Parkfield 2/18 after 5 overs and a change of ends, Razzle took the ball and we continued our efforts to defend our small total. Unfortunately, over the next eight overs Parkfield’s captain went about settling in, finding the gaps and putting away any stray balls. Throughout the innings, a few lucky mishits from Parkfield’s batters also found the gaps, landing out of reach of CHCC hands, and we were uncharacteristically clumsy at times. By the 13th over Amy ‘Wolfie’ Howell was thrown the ball and enough was enough. On the third ball of the over, after a couple of singles had already been taken, Wolfie was quick to field a shot that was struck on the onside to her right, before turning around and throwing in one motion for a direct hit run out. Parkfield were 3/59 after 13.
Unfortunately we were outplayed, and in the 16th over Parkfield chased down the last of the required runs, finishing with a four. Hats off to Parkfield’s captain who finished 48* for the day.
Batting: Izzy Fenner 35, Rachel Gray 15
Bowling: Hannah Watson 1/7 off 3, Emily Costigan 1/23 off 4.
CHICKEN: Congratulations to Izzy on a fine innings of 35 and become the first CHCC woman to make 1000 runs!
CHCC Women’s 2nd XI - Round 3 T20 vs Coburg (2)
Match report by B2
A welcome return to our home ground at Rammo this week, and despite the threatening clouds overhead, we managed to play our Round 5 match, against Coburg CC (2).
Having been sent in to bat, Tylah and Bobbie started our innings with energy, exemplified by Tylah scoring her first boundary and continuing to better her highest score each innings!
Our opening pair were communicating well together, but in the third over, Bobbie was caught, and Laura stepped up to join Tylah in the middle. Unfortunately, Tylah was also soon caught behind and B2 joined Laura to continue the innings.
Runs began to come, but a perhaps somewhat ill timed run, left Laura running to the danger end and run out.
Enter Sherin for her very first cricket innings!
Exit B2 after being caught at mid-on!
Sherin took up the innings with Heather, then Marlo and a strong partnership ensued. With intent and natural run-scoring instinct, Sherin was our top run-scorer! And Marlo, in just her first innings for the season, played a very valuable innings, supporting her partners - Sherin, Georgia, Eloise, Kate (who was also playing her just her first innings) and Jen. After 20 overs Marlo and Jen had protected their wickets and remained not out.
Total: 9/53, after 20 overs.
Time to defend our total, again it was Heather with an early breakthrough! In her second over, Heather bowled the Coburg opener and there was energy in the field!
Bobbie, Tylah and Laura also contributed with a couple of overs each, but despite our efforts in the field - backing each other up and running together in the field - and despite Georgia comprehensively sweeping the onside boundary, our total was overtaken by Coburg.
Coburg finished, 1/53 after 8 overs.
A special mention to Eloise, who played her very first senior women's match, admirably acquitting herself with the bat and in the field!
CHICKEN: This week our best on ground was Sherin, for her run-making prowess, but also for enthusiastically taking up the gloves and utilising her softball catching experience to keep wicket.
We will continue to work on our communication when batting and more fielding practice will be invaluable for our women who are so eager to learn, try and improve!
Well done Clifton Hill!
