Vale George Hewat
A tribute to George
A great friend to many and a proud Hiller, George Hewat passed away on Sunday, 16 February. This loss leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, played alongside him, and shared a drink with him after the game.
Between 1980 and 2015 George played 359 games for Clifton Hill Cricket Club. As a long-time captain of lower-grade teams, George helped shape the cricketing journeys of many young players. His leadership was defined by fairness, camaraderie, and a love for the game. He believed in giving everyone a go, and his carefree, easygoing nature made him the kind of skipper people loved to play for.
George had his own unique approach to the game. As an off-spinner, his strategy was simple - toss it up as high as possible in the hope the batter would play a rash shot. In his words, he would 'buy a few wickets'. And he certainly did - 234 of them, to go with 1851 runs. But George's contribution to our club went far beyond what statistics can measure.
His infectious laugh, his love of a joke, and his ever-present smile brought warmth and joy to those around him. He made every social gathering better, every post-match drink more enjoyable, and every season more memorable. Across generations of Clifton Hill cricketers he was universally loved and admired.
While we will miss him dearly, George’s spirit will live on in the stories, the laughter, and the friendships he helped forge. He was, and always will be, a true Hiller!
Rest in peace George.
