A Stinger in this Tale
With more players down and out with COVID this week — including 1s skipper Ben Cap, the club did an amazing job to get all nine teams (the Women’s 2s had a bye) onto the park this week. Well done to Monty and all those who did heaps of work behind the scenes to make this happen. We were able to snag four wins, too, a great effort, including a brilliant win in the 1s!
MEN’S 1st XI v Mount Waverley Catholics — PRAYERS ANSWERED!
The 1s headed out east sans the isolating Ben Caplikas to take on Mount Waverley Catholics. Stepping up to the skipper’s plate was the second-greatest CHCC player in history to have an A, a C and a Z in his surname, Nick Zajac. Zaj lost the toss and bowled and after Kieren got the first breakthrough with the score at 23, wickets fell regularly. MWC finished up on 9/141, with all bowlers doing well, as these figures show: Benny Levens 2/22 off 7, Kieren Schulz 2/32 off 8, Cottsy 1/23 off 8, Wardi 1/19 off 6 and Louis McGlade — ON DEBUT IN THE 1s — 1/25 off 7. Stinger Barrett (0/20 off 4) missed out with the ball, but…
…in a plot twist, he opened the batting, and took to the role like a duck to water. Speaking of ducks, Kyle made one, as did Zaj (and that’s why he’s only the second-greatest CHCC player in history to have an A, a C and a Z in his surname). But Kieren (25), Lenny Dean (33) and that man Stinger (49) did the job as we passed MWC’s total pretty comfortably.
Great effort lads! As Zaj said on Saturday night you showed a lot of ticker and should all be very proud.
CHICKEN: Lenny Dean’s 33 gets him the bird!
KILLER HILLER MOMENT: TBA
MEN’S 2nd XI v Mount Waverley Catholics — MONTY OR NO MONTY, THE 2s GET IT DONE
Not only was our 1s captain out with COVID, so was ours 2s skipper, the great Monty Stuart. But whether Monty’s there or not, the well-oiled machine that is the CHCC Men’s 2nd XI rolls on. With Wortho at the wheel, we bowled first as always, blasted them out (for 79) as always, and chased the total down comfortably, as always.
Bowling: Tulky 3/22 off 8, Lanno 2/16 off 8, AJ 2/17 off 5.3, Nails 1/11 off 4, Chicky 0/9 off 8
Batting: J-Ho 23, Miles Nelson 23, Jake Castelow 13no, DOC 13no
KILLER HILLER MOMENT: Apparently an instruction went out to our batters that every individual innings total had to end in 3. Well done to J-Ho, Miles, Jake and DOC for carrying that instruction out to the letter.
WOMEN’S 1st XI — WHEN TWO BECOME ONE
Match Report by Izzy
The North West A top of the table clash with Ballarat saw the senior women fielding all 12 available players (thanks Omicron and Junior Rep Carnival (congrats Em!)). Thankfully the 2s had a bye this week so we weren't left short.
Winning the toss and electing to field, the chat amongst the team was to put the pressure on early and aim for a quick wicket. The bowlers had clearly listened to the wise words of the captain and the coach, with Ballarat on the back foot early thanks to incredible pressure by our opening bowlers Amy 'Wolf' Howell and Bec 'Junior' Nolan.
After relentless dot ball pressure, the visitors lost their first wicket in the 8th over at 1/13 with Lauren 'Rex' Chester finding the top of off stump; however, the quality of the top team and reigning premiers was clear with their ability to find the gaps and put the pressure back on us.
Through the middle overs their score kept climbing as chances went begging but with Bec Catterwell patrolling the boundary the batters had to work hard for their runs. Our bowlers persisted and wickets came with Rachael 'Razzle' Jones finding the breakthrough claiming the wicket of their opening bat for 66 with Ash Murdoch, Wolf and Taryn Heddo joining the party.
In her debut game for the 1s Heather worked hard at mid wicket to help build the pressure in close. The quality of Ballarat once again proved to run deep, finishing with a total of 6/168 off their 36 overs. A highlight late in the innings was Hannah Gray swallowing a catch that was thumped low and flat straight to mid off.
After a refreshing beverage and a bite to eat, Rex and Izzy took to the middle to begin the chase. Staring down one of the higher targets we’ve come up against, the aim was to value our wickets and chip away at the total. Izzy released the run rate pressure early dispatching the loose balls but also respecting the good ones.
Rex was busy turning over the strike and seeing off their quality bowling attack with the new ball. At the first drinks break we were sitting nicely at 0/48 after 12 overs, hopeful we could continue to build on that run rate to give us the the best opportunity to chase them down.
Unfortunately after a brain fade in the heat, Izzy misjudged an offie and feathered one to the keeper. Rach ‘The Greyhound’ Gray joined Rex at the crease and the two continued to turn over the strike and find the boundary before Rex was clean bowled after her eyes lit up to swing for a big one.
Much like their batting, Ballarat was relentless with the ball; there were very few loose overs and the run rate began to decline. With Clifton Hill at 2/73 it wasn’t long before we were sitting at 5/75. Ash Murdoch and Rebecca “B2” Troon found a nice little partnership, steadying the chase and putting on a handy 21 before Ash was stumped attacking their spinner. Taryn and B2 finished our innings off with a solid partnership of 22* to finish our 36 overs at 6/118.
While the win wasn’t to be, it was a lovely combination of players from both our women’s teams proving the quality at our club also runs deep.
Batting highlights: Izzy 31, Rex 27, Ash 13
Bowling highlights: Lauren 2/29 off 6, Razzle 1/15 off 5, Ash 1/23 off 6, Amy 1/38 off 9, Taryn 1/35 off 7
CHICKEN: Izzy gave BOG to Rex but she must have been in the running for it, too. Well done to both of you. — Gigs
KILLER HILLER MOMENT: Hannah Gray swallowing a catch that was thumped low and flat straight to mid off.
MEN’S 6th XI v Richmond City — RICHMOND FAN CAPTAINS HILLERS TO VICTORY OVER RICHMOND CITY
Captain Billy ABC might have been expected to have mixed feelings about trying to beat a team named Richmond, but if he did he put them aside as he led the 6s to another brilliant win on Saturday.
Billy lost the toss and bowled, and our bowlers and fielders did an excellent job to hold RC to 163 in their 35 overs, a great effort on little Fairlea East. Jack Barrett led the way with 3/26 off 7, and he got good support from Paddy Rath (1/24 off 7), Luke Williams (2/31 off 4), who according to Billy mixed shocking balls in with brilliant ones, Brother (Sandy Hilal 0/18 , off 4) and Max Sundram (1/1 off 1.1)
After opening the bowling, Jack Barrett opened the batting as well, putting on 56 with Andrew Starkey. Captain Jack made 22 and Starkey made 40. After that Paddy (13), Brocky (16) and Sandy (32no) finished off the job to take Billy’s Boys to another win!
CHICKEN: Special mention Doug Scott for his three catches at the wicket, but the chicken goes to Andrew Starkey for his 40.
Men’s 3rd, 4th, 5th XI: YOU GET A COMBINED MATCH REPORT BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T WIN (and because I’ve had a busy week)
The 3s, 4s and 5s all suffered losses but they will no doubt bounce back this week and earn full match report status! Here’s a quick summary of those games:
3RDS: Vic Caveliers 9/211 (Daisy 2/22 off 8, Lachie Smith 3/42 off 8, Timothy Neal 2/52 off 8) v CHCC 122 (Jack Speed 37, Lachie Smith 23, Zac Wilson 12, Harro 10, Daisy 10no).
CHICKEN: Lachie Smith
4THS: CHCC 7/192 (Chucky 50no, El Presidente 52 no, Roadie 23, Empty 16no) v Ashburton 4/195 (Lachie Muraca 2/36 off 8, Toughman 1/27 off 8, Roadie 1/30 off 6)
CHICKEN: The Pres
5THS: Glen Waverley 5/173 (Ted Smith 3/31 off 7, Hugo 1/18 off 4, Stan K 1/29 off 7) v CHCC 6/160 (Jonesy 57no, Jacko 28, Stan 28, Daylon 20)
CHICKEN: Ted Smith
MEN’S OVER 40s v Glen Waverley Cougars: A PEAKE PERFORMANCE
Tony’s boys (!) headed out to Glen Waverley to take on the Cougars. In his pre-match address Peakey reportedly simply said “Five Cougars thanks” and the bowlers delivered and exceeded on those orders, as GWC finished on 7/174. Excellent bowling from Daisy (2/22 off 6), Stan (1/9 off 6), Michael Mansfield (1/13 off 3), Harro (1/45 off 5) and the skipper himself (0/19 off 6).
The boys (!!) then got the job done with the bat, getting the runs six down with heaps of overs to spare thanks to Harro (44no), Stan 37, Ian Nolan 25 and Daisy 19no.
CHICKEN: Excellent work with bat and ball from Daisy but Harro’s run-out gets him the chicken.
MEN’S OVER 50s v Surrey Hills
Ralph’s Rebels coudn’t quite match the Over 40s effort, falling short despite an excellent effort to chase down a big total.
Scores: Surrey Hills 217 (Peter Ryan 2/21, Ralph 1/16, Paul Crow 1/24, Tim Blaikie 1/30, Percy Harrison 1/41) v CHCC 183 (Chris Gill 42no, Craig Harris 40no, Ralph 28, Tim B 25).
CHICKEN: Excellent work with the bat by Craig Harris but Chris Gill gets the chicken for making two more runs and having bigger hair.
THE TOM BELLIS AWARD
Probably a close run thing between the Barrett brothers but Stinger gets the nod for his match winning 49 in the 1s!
